How buyers choose you before they ever call.
Most owners think a customer decides to hire them on the call.
The truth is most of the deciding happens before you ever talk. A buyer finds you online, sizes you up in about thirty seconds, and either trusts you enough to reach out or moves on to the next name.
You never hear about the ones who moved on. That is what makes this hard to see from the inside.
Five questions. Give yourself one point for each one you can honestly say yes to.
1. A stranger can find your story online
Not just photos of your work. Why you started, who is behind it, what you stand for.
A prospect looking at three companies sees three galleries of finished jobs. The galleries look the same. What separates you is the part nobody can photograph.
Yes if: somebody who has never met you could explain what your company is about after five minutes on your site.
2. Your customers vouch for you in their own words, somewhere public
Not a star rating. A real person telling their real story about working with you.
A five star review says somebody was satisfied. A customer explaining what was different because you were the one doing the work says something a competitor cannot copy.
Yes if: there is at least one place online where a real client describes the experience in their own words.
3. Your website makes someone feel like they already know you
Not the same stock photos as every competitor. Something that makes a buyer trust you before the first call.
Most sites in most industries are interchangeable. Same headline, same stock imagery, same three service boxes. A buyer cannot use any of it to choose.
Yes if: somebody could tell your website from your closest competitor's with the logos removed.
4. People can see the humans behind the work
Your team, your founder, real faces, not just a logo and finished jobs.
Buyers hire people. On a longer sales cycle they are trying to figure out who they would be dealing with for the next six months, and a logo tells them nothing.
Yes if: a prospect can put a face to your company before they meet anyone.
5. You share what makes you different, not just what you did
The reason to pick you over two other firms doing the same thing. The part a competitor cannot copy.
This is the one most companies fail, and they usually do not know it. Ask an owner what makes them different and you get quality, service, communication, and family owned. All true. All said by everyone bidding the same work.
Yes if: you can name something your closest competitor could not honestly say about themselves.
Your score
4 to 5. You are already winning buyers before they call. Most of your competitors are not. Protect that lead.
2 to 3. You are leaving trust on the table. Buyers who would have picked you are choosing the firm they were more sure about. Fixable, fast.
0 to 1. Right now a buyer comparing you to two competitors has almost nothing to go on but price. The hardest game to win, and the easiest thing to fix.
What to do with the number
If you scored low, the instinct is usually to add more. More posts, more photos, a website refresh.
That is not the fix. The fix is figuring out what you would say if you only got one sentence, and then making sure a stranger can find it.
Number five is the one that unlocks the rest. Once you know the thing only you can say, the story, the testimonials, the site, and the faces all have something to be about.
The businesses that win are not the loudest. They are the ones people already trust before the first call.
If your score surprised you, that is the gap we close.
About this
We make documentary style video for manufacturing and construction companies across Greensboro and the Triad. The first part of every project is answering question five, because everything after it depends on the answer.
See how that plays out on real projects.
